VPS

DigitalOcean vs Vultr Benchmark

Charts and raw data included.

Methodology

I’ll be benchmarking clean servers located in Amsterdam (DigitalOcean Amsterdam server nr.2) and Frankfurt, all in a $10/month plan, with a Ubuntu Ubuntu 16.04 x64 installed.
To benchmark, I’ll use serverscope.io.

Specification

DigitalOcean:

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2650L v3, 1 x 1.80GHz
1024 MB RAM
30 GB SSD

Vultr:

Virtual CPU, 1 × 2400 MHz
1024 MB RAM
21 GB SSD

Let the charts tell the truth (in all cases higher is better).

Conclusion

There are big differences between different locations and providers, so we should always benchmark VPS.
Vultr is usually faster than DigitalOcean (nothing new, btw.).
Servers in Frankfurt are faster than in Amsterdam.
DigitalOcean servers in Amsterdam are quite bad.

Raw data

Vultr Amsterdam

Vultr Frankfurt

Additional benchmark for DigitalOcean Amsterdam server number 3 (it’s even worse, 896.5 UnixBench score) here.

Disclaimer

This post wasn’t sponsored by anyone. I’m going to make more benchmarks in the future.

Feel free to comment below about your experience with DigitalOcean and Vultr, I’m really curious.
